My problem with the “It BrOuGhT iN wAy MoRe MoNeY”argument

Whenever people compare movies they always and I mean ALWAYS bring up the box office. You know what, I really hate that. The box offices importance only pertains to the people who worked on the film, the theaters and the studios. People always thinks that the amount of money the movie makes effects how good it is. And I call bull crap on that. Just because a movie made a lot doesn’t make it better or worse than another movie. For example, you could have a really bad Marvel movie and yet the box office numbers skyrocket. Because die hard Marvel fans are exactly that, die hard. No matter how bad the film is they will go and they will make the company a TON of money, now take a smaller film that maybe was made internationally or films like Fast Color and Greta who are much smaller scale but can still measure up to big budget films. People quiet often don’t go to the theater to look at a new film unless its from something they already know. People just don’t want to take risks anymore, so you see people going to movies that are a part of a franchise, or something that is related to things that happened in the past. For example the films; Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), Blinded by the light (Bruce Springsteen), Yesterday (the Beatles). Are all films who have some sort of connection to the past. In this case specifically they all are related to musicians that are pre 2000’s. They all brought in an average of 346.3 million dollars worldwide.

The same can be said for live action Disney films that brought an average of 323.5 BILLION dollars world wide (putting the box office total of dumbo, lion king and Aladdin together.)

Okay that’s enough math for me, you get the point. People need to understand that the box office does not at all reflect the quality of the film, it just reflects the amount of fanatics it has. People who argue with me about these things unfortunately lack the INtElLeCt to discuss things like themes, character arcs, audience reviews and pacing, which are all things that ACTUALLY effect the quality of a film, not the amount of cultist followers said film has.

Just to be clear I didn’t mean to attack films that are biopics or part of a franchise because they can still be amazing films! Some of my favorite films are How to Train your Dragon (part of a franchise) and Bohemian Rhapsody (part of the biopics category.) All I am saying is that people should not use the argument of box office numbers to try to make their point in an argument comparing films.

Lol it kinda seemed like I went off on this post and I kinda did I guess? I’m a big defender of the final how to train your dragon film which is often compared to the PILES of Marvel movies that are coming out this year and the #1 thing they use to defend their films is “It BrOuGhT iN wAy MoRe MoNeY” and that. that just pisses me off.
